Identity Thief

Is Sandy Patterson a banking executive living in Colorado with his wife and kids or is he a she and living it up in Florida?  When Sandy is accused of crimes he hasn't committed, he must track down the woman who is using his identity.  Hilarious but can be saved for the DVD.  3 bags of popcorn.  Stars Jason Bateman, Melissa McCarthy, Jon Favreau and Amanda Peet.

Stand Up Guys

The tough-guy comedy follows the rambunctious reunion between three retired gangsters and their reminiscences of wild times and crimes gone by.  Energized by their own memories, the drunken friends unwisely undertake a reckless criminal adventure.  Entertaining but save for the DVD.  2 bags of popcorn.  Stars Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Alan Arkin, and Julianna Margulies.

Side Effects

Emily copes with her depression by taking antidepressant medication.  But when her dire state apparently spirals out of control due to her husband's prison release, she turns to a new medication that alters life forever.  I can't say any more about this psychological thriller without giving away the plot.  It will keep you on the edge of your seat.  Catherine Zeta-Jones at her most evil self.  Four bags of popcorn.  Stars Rooney Mara, Jude Law, Channing Tatum, Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Parental Guidance

When their daughter must leave for a week, Artie and Diane Decker find themselves in charge of their three grandchildren, whose well-regimented and high-tech lives leave grandma and grandpa baffled and ready to bring on the old school parenting.  This movie has been at the theater for a long time.  When I went on a Saturday afternoon, their was a mix of baby boomers and middle schoolers.  The movie is entertaining and funny from a grandparent's point of view and a kid's point of view.  By the way, the theater was full of movie goers.  I give this 3 bags of popcorn.  Stars Billy Crystal, Bette Midler, Marisa Tomei, Tom Everett Scott.

Hyde Park On Hudson

When the King and Queen of England visit Franklin Delano Roosevelt hoping for support on the eve of WWII, Roosevelt must deal with his official duties as well as the competing interests of his mother, wife and mistresses.  Sailors may have a girl in every port but FDR had sweet thing in every cottage on the estate.  He was not the wane little disabled President but a "randy" image is portrayed.  I give it 3 bags of popcorn.  Stars Bill Murray, Laura Linney, Olivia Coleman.

Quartet

A trio of retired opera singers' annual celebration of Verdi's birthday sours when their estranged fourth member shows up but refuses to sing.  Tensions rise and diva drama erupts--will personal problems prevent the show from going on?  Maggie Smith is at her best as are all the other older actors and actresses.  Who says they don't have the stuff it takes to continue to be a star.  Totally entertaining for the 50 plus crowd.  I give it 4 bags of popcorn.  It stars Maggie Smith, Tom Courtney, Bill Connolly, Pauline Collins, Michael Gambon.
