Iconic filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock struggles with his marriage, the censors and the financiers of his 1960 film Psycho. Driven to prove he still has an edge, Hitchcock crafts what would become one of the greatest thrillers of all times. While he and the making of Psycho is the main thrust, his wife Alma plays a major role in his life and success. The movie also focuses on her and her desires. You will be thoroughly entertained and come to appreciate a woman who was in the background but not forgotten or not appreciated by her husband. The movie stars Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Toni Collette and Jessica Biel.

A Royal Affair
In 18th century Denmark, the unstable King Christian IV neglects his young queen who fall in love with the King's German physician who is an intellectual. The physicial advocates reform to transform the country but brings about his own downfall. Stars Mads Middelsen; Mikkel Boe Folsaard; Alicial Vidander. I need to get back to the 21st century where the human race is somwhat civil. I got lost in all the lopping off of heads. On the other hand, politics hasn't really changed all that much over the centuries. Save this one for the DVD.
Life of Pi
Based on a best-selling novel, this coming of age tale recounts the adventures of Pi, an Indian boy who is the sole survivor of a shipwreck. Pi finds himself on a lifeboat with only zoo animals for company including a Bengal tiger. The animals hunt each other and the tiger is the last animal standing so it's just Pi and the tiger. Must see this in 3D, the best 3D movie I have seen. Stars Irrfarn Khan; Suraj Sharma; Gerard Depardieu. Entertaining but hard to believe. Personally, I would have drowned the tiger and saved the chimp. I am missing some great philosophical symbol behind the tiger.

Silver Linings Playbook
After a four-year stay in a psychiatric institution, former teacher Pat Peoples has no choice but to move back in with his parents. While he is trying in vain to reunite with his wife, Pat meets another woman fated to change his life. The movie stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro, and Jacki Weaver. This is a new perspective on mental illness. With that being said, it is thoroughly entertaining. I would put it on my to see in the theater list, but definitely see it when it comes out on DVD.

Lincoln
This will be one of movie greats in years to come. The movie focuses on the towering legacy of Abraham Lincoln and his stewardship of the Union during the civil war years. In particular it focuses on the 13th amendment and it development and passage. The biographical saga also reveals the conflict within Lincoln's cabinet as regards the war and abolition. Not one of you out there should miss this. It is what being American is about. Needless to say, the movie has Academy Award written all over it. It stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, David Stathairm and Hal Holbrook.

Anna Karenina
Anna Karenina is the titular 19th-century Russian aristocrat who enters into a passionate and forbidden love affair with the well-heeled Count Vronsky. It stars Keira Knightley; Jude Law; Matthew Macfadyen; Emily Watson. The movie is totally disjointed and staged as if in the theater. So don't expect any great Russian scenery. This was not Kiera Knightley's best performance but she has a chance at the Academy for "best pained facial expressions". She is much better at comedy and 21st century roles. I would give the movie a mediocre B.

Late Quartet
Tempers flare, old jealousies reignite and new passions are sparked when the members of a world-renowned string quartet are preparing to celebrate their 25th anniversary and they learn that their leader must step down due to a grim medical diagnosis. The movie is playing in theaters now. It stars Philip Seymour Hoffman; Christopher Walken; Catherine Keener; and Wallace Shawn. While entertaining, it does not compete with other movies currently playing in area theaters. It is a little too melodramatic and touchy feely. In retrospect I would move it to my DVD list.

Flight
Playing currently in area theaters, this movie will shake your flying attitude. After his amazing safe landing of a damaged passenger plane, an airline pilot is praised for the feat, but has private questions about what happened. Further, the government's inquiry into the causes soon puts the new hero's reputation at risk. Having many times flown the east coast corridor from Orlando to Atlanta to DC, I was familiar with the violent thunderstorms that can occur. After the first fifteen minutes of the flight, I was ready to check AM TRACK schedules for the rest of my life. However, the movie is less about fear of flying and more about addictions. Denzel Washington (the pilot) gives a superb performance as does John Goodman (his drug dealer). The movie also stars Kelley Reilly and Don Cheadle. As we get closer to Academy Award nomination time, this one will be on the list for at least special effects.

Skyfall
Now playing in theaters everywhere. When a serious menace threatens M16, James Bond is on the case--putting aside his own life and personal issues to hunt and obliterate the perpetrators. Meanwhile, secrets arise from M's past that strain Bond's loyalty to his long time boss. Movie stars Daniel Craig, Javier Barden, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench, and Naomie Harris. Ladies, if you want to be a hero, take your man to this one. The action and special effects are unbelievable. It is just plain fun to see. The movie is Bond at its best.

The Sessions
Currently playing in area theaters, this movie focuses on a man who has spent years in an iron lung. He decides he wants to explore his sexuality for the first time and hires a surrogate to aid him in reaching this goal. Through the intensifying relationship, this drama illustrates the many forms love can take. It is touching and handles the subject of sexuality in a format that is tasteful. Acting is superb especially the character play by Helen Hunt. Also stars John Hawkes, Moon Bloodgood, and Adam Arkin.

ARGO
Playing in theaters everywhere and it should be. In 1979 when Iranian militants seized the American embassy, six Americans slipped into the Canadian embassy for protection, prompting the CIA to concoct an elaborate plot to rescue them. They were to pretend that they were film makers rather than diplomats in Iran to scope out a move location for the film ARGO. The movie stars Ben Affleck, Alan Arkin, Taylor Schilling, Bryan Cranston and many more superb actors. I was kept on the edge of my seat with this story which is true. The best thriller I have seen this year. No doubt about the Academy nomination for the film and at the minimum Ben Affleck. Do Not Miss This Movie because it is one of the best this year.

The Other Son
Joseph, an 18 year-old musician preparing to join the Israeli Army for his military service, lives at home in a comfortable suburb of Tel Aviv with his parents, French-born physician and Israeli-born Army commander. A blood test revealed a mix-up at the hospital. This revelation turns lives upside down as parents and sons are informed. Stars no-one you have heard of but should. The characters will pull at your heart strings. The mothers of both boys are the real heroines. Playing at one theater in our area. Since it has sub-titles, don't expect it to last long. Something about our culture and having to read your script. More the pity since many of the great films have sub-titles.

Seven Psychopaths
Playing in theaters now, the story centers on Marty a struggling writer who needs inspiration to finish his screenplay Seven Psychopaths. He get plenty of it when his oddball friends nab a crazed gangster's beloved pooch. Mary is inadvertently caught up in all the action. Stars Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, and Christopher Walken. So perposterous that it is entertaining and not frightening with all the bloodshed.
Sister
Currently playing in theaters, everyday, improvised 12-year -old Simon sneaks into a posh Swiss ski resort, where he helps himself to the gear of wealthy tourists. Benefiting from his thievery is his lazy sister, Louise who refuses to live up to her responsibilities. Movie stars Lea Seydoux, Kacey Mottet Klein, Martin Coupston. Lots of holes in the story like how do they afford that descent apartment when it looks like Simon is the only one bringing in money. Where is the Swiss welfare system or maybe there isn't one. Doesn't anyone notice Simon doesn't go to school. Given all that I was entertained and it brought back fond memories of skiing in Switzerland. Although I think the scenery was more Mount Blanc in France.

Looper
Playing in the theaters now, in this sci-fi mind bender, a mob hit man who kills people sent from the future finds himself in a curious predicament when he discovers that one of his targets is his future self, shipped back through time to be whacked. The movie stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, and Emily Blunt. Novel idea but at times you get confused by what is the future and what is now. On the whole, it is entertaining.

The Paperboy
Playing in theaters now, this is the story of a death row inmate's female pen pal that is convinced the the convict is innocent. She gets a reporter and his brother to investigate and they discover that the case is marred by deceit, seduction and betrayal. Meanwhile one brother falls for the convicts pen pal. Stars Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, and John Cusack. The acting is exceptional, especially Nicole Kidman. It will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end.
Pitch Perfect
Now playing in theaters, this musically-steeped comedy draws on the worlds of cappella groups to tell the story of an intense competition between three ensembles. Ann Kendrick stars in the age-old art form that is gaining popularity today. Also stars Brittany Snow. It is also the age-old plot of the "underdog" winning. While the story is predictable, the music is great and worthy of at least renting the DVD when it comes out.

The Oranges
In theaters now. When newly unattached Nina Ostroff (Leighton Meesston) comes home for Thanksgiving, her mother makes plans to pair her up with their neighbors successful son Toby (Adam Brody). But Nina sets her sights on Toby's father and her father's best friend. Needless to say, friendship and the neighborhood goes to Hell in a hand basket. The best part is when Toby's mother bitch slaps Nina. I kinda wanted to do it since the fist 20 minutes of the movie. Movie also stars Catherine Keener and Allison Janney. Extremely entertaining.

Butter
When a gifted butter sculptor announces his forced retirement, his ambitious wife sees her hopes for future fame melt away. She set out to take up the mantle but soon learns how cut throat the world of pro butter sculpting can be when she is challenged by a ten year-old gifted sculptor. The movie is in theaters now. It stars Olivia Wilde, Hugh Jackman, and Jennifer Garner. Very entertaining and worth the trip to the theater. Although I do not believe Iowa has such a competition.

End Of Watch
In theaters now. Officers Taylor and Zavata patrol the streets of South Central LA, an area of the city ruled by gangs and riddled with drug violence. Their perilous beat is captured on security footage and with the HD cameras of cops, criminals and victims. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhall and Michael Pena. Something whether it be the movie or the stars will be nominated for an Academy Award or Awards. Having worked several years with NCIS before retiring, the story is real and a great depiction of the tough career of a law enforcement officer. Superb acting by everyone including the "bad guys". I left the theater thanking God for the Men and Women in Blue that put up with the dredges of society for us.

The Perks Of Being a Wallflower
A shy freshman struggling with depression deals with his best friend's suicide and his first love in this engaging coming of age tale. Logan Lerman and Emma Watson star is the film which is in theaters now. Not Academy Award material but still entertaining. There are sub plots which are simple to interpret except for Aunt Helen. I don't think that I am that naive but if anyone out there can clue me in on Aunt Helen's role in his depression, please let me know.

The Master
In theaters now. A heavy drinking loner named Freddie finds some semblance of a family when he stumbles onto the ship of Lancaster Dodd, the charismatic leader of a new "religion"--some say cult--he forms after World War II. It stars Joaquin Phoenix, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams. This is a movie that the professional movie goers love because it "runs deep" and it isn't a Chevy. The acting is superb and I predict Academy Award nominations for cast and movie. It is definitely a drama and can be very disturbing but portrays how cults can take hold of people. Especially in this case, someone who has deep emotional and mental problems.

Trouble With The Curve
In Theaters now. Slowed by age and failing eyesight, crack baseball scout Gus Lobel checks out the final prospect of his career. Lawyer daughter Mickey joins him uninvited on the trip. Along the way, the two renew their bond, and she catches the eye of a young player-turned-scout. Stars Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams, Justin Timberlake. I loved the movie but I am not objective. Amy Adams is one of my favorite actresses. Clint Eastwood is an icon in the movie business. Both do an excellent job. Justin isn't so bad either, actually he is really believable. Learned more about baseball than I ever wanted to know. Great entertainment, put it on your "to see" list.

The Guard
2011 movie now in DVD format. When tightly wound FBI agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle) invades an Irish village in pursuit of international drug dealers, wisecracking local copper Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson) does his best to annoy the American and get on with his circumscribed life. But soon there's a murder, and Boyle finds himself swept up in detective work way beyond his pay grade. At first, I was distracted by the heavy Irish accents but as the film progressed it got better. Subtittles would have enhanced the enjoyment of this film and made for less guess work on the dialogue. Now I know why theaters have the volume so high--If you blast out your eardrums, there's a better chance to understand thick accents.

One Day
2011 film now on DVD. After a romantic tryst on college graduation night, Emma and Dexter pursue separate dreams. This romantic drama based on a novel of the same name checks in with them each year on the same date, tracking their personal and professional progress. Stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. This is the ultimate tear jerker. If you had a bad day and are in need of a Pity Party, this is the DVD for you. It is soppy, soppy emotional, just bring your tissue box. My major complaint was the mumbled dialogue with heavy English accents that were not understandable. Truly a foreign film sans subtittles.
The Odd Life of Timothy Green
In theaters now. When Cindy and Jim Green are told they can't have a baby, they bury a box filled with wishes for their dream child. That night, a mysterious boy appears who brings magic to their lives--and the entire town of Stanleyville. Stars Jennifer Garner, Joel Edgeton, C J Adams, Dianne Wiest. While deep down you know the movie is a fantasy, it still keeps your attention. It does put a spin on the mistakes Cindy and Jim make in their parenting skills--especially when it comes to sports and winning. It is still an entertaining and feel good movie. It is not meant for children under seven. I had to sit next to a cranky 4 year old who just wanted to go home.

Circumstance
Iranian teens Atafeh and Shireen explore their forbidden attraction to one another against the backdrop of modern-day Tehran. Atafeh's brother, Mehran, returns home after drug rehab and is soon dismayed by his sister's new found sense of liberation. This 2011 film is now a DVD. Half-way into the movie, you realize the girls' are forming a lesbian relationship. This is set among the strict rules enforced on females and their role in Tehran society. The movie can be disturbing especially the scenes the reflect the cruel behavior to women. It is a real eye opener to the situation women face in the Iranian culture.
The Secret World of Arrietty
I waited for this to come to DVD and that was a good choice. When a time "borrower" named Arrietty makes friends with a young boy many time her size, she must also shield her family from his towering elders. But trouble brews when a curious maid starts asking questions. Animation is great but it is still a kid's movie. Get it to entertain visiting kids under eight.
Arbitrage
This high finance crime thriller is playing in theaters now. Billionaire Robert Miller struggles to divest his empire before his fraud is discovered, but fate takes a nasty turn and he must trust an unlikely source. Tim Roth, Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon star in the movie. Arbitrage in economics and finance is the practice of a price difference between two or more markets--striking a combination of matching. I can't give you more details without giving away the ending. It is fast paced with lots of of twists and turns. Morale of the story is that money talks and can move mountains.

Bourne Legacy
In theaters now. This action packed thriller follows the Jason Bourne debacle. The CIA finds itself dealing with a familiar threat when another estranged operative surfaces. Jeremy Renner stars with Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, and Joan Allen. It would be helpful if you had a PHD in biology, chemistry or medicine. It took half the movie to understand this very technical plot. A lot of filling viles with blood, syringes, etc. so not for those that are faint at the sight of blood or needles. After an hour, I figured out that CIA was messing with the operatives blood and genetics. Or maybe not. It did not put the CIA or FBI in very good light. I liked the previous Bourne movies better.

Expendables 2
In theaters now. In this high octane thriller, Mr. Church brings the Expendables back together for an easy job--but things go wrong and one of the mercenaries is brutally murdered. Now the band of hired guns goes on a mission of revenge in hostile territory. I am not an action thriller movie seeker, however you have to love both Expendables movies. I totally get it now. This is what the guys love and there is none of that relationship/emotional stuff to think about. Filled with unbelievable action (we know it is a fantasy), I even found myself rooting the Expendables on to victory. Better than the NFL. Simple story and with lots of action and bang, bang is a great break from reality. I found myself imagining that I was Wonder Woman and going after the bade guys. There is something to be said for a break from reality. Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger star in the movie.
Expendables
I saw this 210 DVD recently and loved it. Mercenary Barney Ross leads a ragtag band of hired guns charged with overthrowing a South American despot. No job a military unit is willing to touch. But, on the ground, the team learns there is more to the mission then what they are told. Unbelievable action scenes that are really a fantasy. Stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Doph Lundgren, Jet Li, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Little White Lies
It's French and complicated but in a good way. When Max and Vero's friend is seriously injured in an accident, they chose to go ahead with a planned birthday celebration at their beach house--an event that draws a convivial and happy crowd of friends. My major complaint was the sub tittles often faded when they appeared white on white. This happens more and more in foreign flicks these days. This is the ultimate Beach House story. The house is located on the Med in Southern France and is huge and beautiful. The wine flows as does the food. You will find yourself hungry and thirsty. They actually have wine for breakfast. The plot evolves around a number of relationship situations. Actually, the Game of Thrones was easier to keep the characters separated. For this reason, I am keeping it on my DVD list because it is worth seeing again. Great scenery, fun party scenes, and great acting. It stars Francois Cluzet (Untouchables), Marion Cotillard, Benoit Magimel, Gilles Lellouche, Valarie Bonneton. It is playing in the theaters now.

Love Carrot 3
Now playing at Shirlington (haven't seen it anywhere else). It is a Russian comedy--who knew they had a sense of humor. Basic story is a Russian couple (he is a lawyer and she is an museum curator) are cutting a deal for three Faberge' eggs to go on a world wide exhibit. He has a General for a father and she has the mother from hell. Grandmazilla is living with them and grandpa comes to visit for two weeks. Grandmazilla and grandpa can't stand each other and fight constantly. A friend visits and breaks out a bottle of cognac. All drink. Grandmazilla and grandpa end up in bed with each other. Everyone freaks out and during this trauma, the couple's personalities switch with their respective parents. The Faberge' Eggs are really part of a bigger scam which includes an unknown Tchaikovsky musical piece. It was somewhere between vaudeville and the 3 Stooges. All in all it was entertaining and I found myself laughing at the antics. Nobody you have ever heard of starred in this movie.

The Change-Up
This 2011 DVD is a contemporary reality-warp comedy, single playboy Mitch and responsible husband-father Dave are best buddies who want each other's life-- and they get the chance when they magically swap bodies after a night of drunken revelry. Stars Jason Bateman; Ryan Reynolds; Olivia Wilde; Leslie Mann; and Alan Arkin. I am not sorry that I missed it in the theaters but the DVD was mildly entertaining for a rainy afternoon.

Robot & Frank
When he gets a robot caretaker to look after his house and keep him company, retired cat burglar Frank realizes it would make the perfect accomplice. This movie is in the theaters now. It stars Frank Langella and Peter Sarsgaard. It deals with the onset of dementia and the effect on one's life and family. There many humorous moments and you will find yourself rooting for Frank and the robot to accomplish their last big heist. Especially recommend it for the over 50 crowd.

ParaNorman
When an army of zombies invades a small town, it is up to an odd local boy with a knack for communicating with the dead to save the day. This animated film is in theaters now. Animation was great and the grade school crowd howled with laughter. Right up there with Casper the Friendly Ghost. There were equally as many twenty somethings in the theater too and they weren't babysitting. Stars Kodi Smit-McPhee and Tucker Albrizzi. Your 3rd to 6th grader will love you for taking them. Did I mention that it is in 3D?

Super 8
I don't remember hearing about this movie when it was in the theaters. I saw this 2011 DVD and loved it. I am not a big Sci-Fi fan but the kids were great. A supernatural tale about six kids who witness something incredible while shooting a movie with their Super 8 camera. J.J. Abrams directs and Steven Spielberg does his thing. Stars Joel Courtney and Kyle Chandler. Interesting story line and great special effects. Not too bloody and gory.

Monte Carlo
2011 DVD that is the ultimate "chick flick". Disappointed with their uninspired tour group in Paris, Emma (Katie Cassidy), Meg (Leighton Meester) and Grace (Selena Gomez) are swept into a breathtaking whirlwind of wealth, glamour and excess when one of the young friends is mistaken for a British heiress. While the girls are whisked away to Monte Carlo and find themselves falling deeper into the lie, the alluringly extravagant lifestyle opens up new opportunities and unexpected romance. A good bag of pop corm and your best girlfriend for this one. Your significant other will hate you if you force him to watch. The fashions are worth the tempid story line.
Farewell My Queen
As revolution threatens Louis XVI's reign, Marie Antoinette asks a lady in waiting to act as a decoy for her dear friend so she can escape unharmed. The lady in waiting is her reader. The dear friend is another noblewoman that Marie Antoinette is extremely fond of and admires in many ways. At this point, one is not sure if the attraction is sexual and really only suggests and lets your imagination do the rest. The movie is in the theaters now. I initially ignored it since the subject is historical and we know the ending. I am not particularly fond of seeing a queen get her head loped off. While the Lady in Waiting (LIW) agrees to help, she begins to have second doubts about being used. I didn't expect it to be good, but it was. Great character portrayal of the servants of the court. Who ever heard of a reader? You do root for the underdog on this one. Stars Lea Seydouy, Diane Kruyer, and Virginie Ledayen.

Friends With Kids
2011 DVD. I missed the movie when it was in the theaters this spring. Best friends Jason and Julie decide that the way to have kids without sacrificing their social lives or careers is to raise a child together platonically. But romance and other complications interfere with their perfect plan. Adam Scott and Jennifer Westfeldt star as the friends. The movie kept my attention but the DVD format was the way to watch it. They missed the main points of marriage and having children. Sure there are hard times but they are out weighted by the good and great times.

Fast Five
Saw this movie in DVD format. I would have enjoyed going to a theater to see it. Vin Diesel and Paul Walker return for this fifth installment of the explosive Fast and Furious series. Brian (Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) break Dom (Diesel) out of prison and thy head to Brazil to put together a racing team to take on a drug dealer who wants to kill them. At the same time, they have to elude the capture of uncompromising federal agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) who's been dispatched to Rio to take them down. Lots of action and a fairly good story line. It kept my attention for two hours. Definitely worth seeing.
The Campaign
In theaters now and rates a must see. There is plenty of mud getting slung when an inexperienced contender backed by two plotting benefactors goes up against a long time North Carolina congressman in a ruthless battle to win a House of Representatives Congressional seat. Living in DC, it really hits home on the ugly side of politics. That said, the antics are really funny and not a serious moment to be had. Sit back and enjoy some meaningless humor. Stars Will Ferrell, Zack Galifiankis, Dan Aykroyd. A long time since I have been in a packed theater.
Bellflower
This 2011 DVD rated the old "eject". Even though it was a Canne Film Festival selection, it made no sense and lacked any shred of entertainment.

2 Days in Paris
I saw this 2007 movie in DVD format because 2 Days in New York will be coming soon to the area theaters. Julie Delpy stars in both movies. Adam Goldberg is the male lead in this movie. On their way home from an ill fated Venice vacation, Marion and Jack stop in Paris to visit Marion's parents. The Paris leg of their vacation is equally disastrous. Marion needs some serious anger management therapy with a dose of something to control her active sex life. Poor Adam is unaware of these problems but Paris brings out Marion's worst side. Note that Adam does not make it to the follow on movie in 2 Days in New York. Half-way through the movie, I realized I had seen it before but it was still enjoyable. Loved her rages and attitude about former boyfriends.
Rabbit Hole
Becca and Howie grapple with realities of life 8 months after the death of their 4 year old son, Danny. I saw this in DVD format since I missed it at the theaters in 2010. This movie is sad and emotional but best seen in the confines of your home. Nicole Kidman is Becca and Aaron Eckhart is Howie. Sound is not always the best and leaves you wishing for closed captions. I think I am more the happy movie type.
Hope Springs
Kay and Arnold have been married 30 + years. Kay is unhappy and wants to bring passion back to her marriage. Husband Arnold is oblivious to any problems in their relationship and why having separate bedrooms is not the norm. Kay insists they attend a marriage therapy week to shed their inhibitions and learn new sexual and emotional moves. The movie which is currently in the theaters, is for the 50 + crowd. It should be required for married baby boomers. Meryl Streep as Kay and Tommy Lee Jones as Arnold are fantastic. Steve Carell plays the therapist. It might hit too close to home for some but the acting and humor are worth seeing it now and not waiting for the DVD.

The Strange Case of Angelica
Released in 2010, this DVD was a Canne Film Festival Selection. It takes place in 1950's Portugal. A well-to-do family hires a young photographer named Issac to take the last photographs of their deceased daughter, Angelica. Upon seeing her, Issac falls deeply in love and soon finds her returning to life in his camera lens. No one you have ever heard of the stars in this film. Although, the acting is quite good. It is one of those movies that sneaks up on you. You get hooked by when and where Angelica is going to pop-up. However, it is not horror story material. Kind of like Casper(the friendly ghost), she is a lovable spirit.
Diary of A Wimpy Kid--Dog Days
Now playing in theaters. Greg Heffley's summer vacation disintegrates into one misadventure after another, including faking a job at the country club when his father bans any video games for the summer. This works out well because his best friend is a member as is his current love interest (Holley). Greg's older brother is infatuated withe Holley's older sister Heather. Dad finds out the truth and it is all downhill from there. I and a theater of middle schoolers Hee Hawed over the adventures. It was probably better than most of the Wimpy Kid movies, however middle school humor is the best description. Take your middle school neice or nephew. No real big stars in this one.

Love Crime
A chilling tale of two ambitious women whose professional appetites grow dangerously personal. Stars Ludivine Sagnier and Kristin Scott Thomas. Captivating movie that I don't remember coming to our Northern VA theaters. Acting is great. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. Sub-tittles go a bit fast but worth the effort. Scariest thing is I understand how this can happen having survived the DC rat race. I bet those working for any of the Fortune 500 can also understand. Oh--it's not limited to women but probably more common with men.

Zookeeper
When an unlucky-in-love zookeeper tells his romantic wores to the zoo animals, the critters advise him on how to win the heart of the woman that got away. First you have to wrap your mind around animals talking. This is best done with a bottle of very good wine and lots of it. Then, the possibilities begin to make sense. I didn't have wine so I did it in two nights. To say it is entertainig is a stretch--oh well, maybe a little.
The Ledge
An unusual, character-driven thriller that follows a young hotel manager (Gavin), who steps out onto a high ledge to commit suicide. World-weary police officer Hollis is assigned to talk him down but is haunted by his own traumatic issues. Stars Charlie Human and Terrance Howard. Very captivating movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I wish that I had seen it when it was in the theaters.
Queen of Versailles
A documentary about the Siegels who made a fortune in the time-share business only to see it crumble in the 2008 financial collapse. The site of their rise and almost fall is their home is construction: Versailles. The 60,00 square foot house (maybe larger) is a gaudy replica of the Palace of Versailles. Jackie Siegel is the mother of eight and a former model and an IT engineer. She was raised in a small town in upper state NY. She is the third wife and hubby is a typical high powered businessman. Kids are cute as are the pets. Somehow you start to sympathize with their delima. The have the same daily life as you and me, just with maids, nannies and other help. You will enjoy Jackies cutting costs, especially when she takes on cooking. I highly recommend the movie to give you a reality check on life.
Something Borrowed
Successful single lawyer Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) learns that her best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson) is engaged to Dex (Colin Egglesfield), the same guy she has had a crush on for years. She tries to be loyal but she and Dex wind-up in bed on her 30th Birthday. Darcy is off the radar pushy as the best friend and Rachel needs a good kick in the butt. Dex isn't worth the drama. He is a spoiled rich kid but his resemblance to Tom Cruise is uncanny. Typical chick flick for a night with little entertainment. All that said, it really isn't bad and the fashions make it worthwhile as does the good looking males.

The Big Miracle
A very feel good movie and a true story about three whales trapped in the Artic Circle. The ice is closing in fast in Barrows, Alaska and the whales can't get to the open sea to continue their migration south. The US and USSR team up to save the whales. Drew Barrymore is the Green Peace Activist and girlfriend of a TV journalist (John Krasinski) stationed in Barrows. He also discovered the whales plight. Drew goes to Barrows to save the whales. She is off the chart on perkiness. I can't envision a Green Peace activist as perky, pseudo cheerleader for the whale team. Ted Dansin is the business big wig that agrees to help in the effort after the wifely nudge and also to get much need PR for his business ventures. The governor and mayor play the heavies. Just remember that I have been in DC for many years and I am jaded in this arena. Kristen Bell is the news journalist who also comes to Barrows to report on the whales. I would use the term "bimbo blond" but she is more self-centered and out for number one. The whales are great, big and lovable. Recommend the DVD for a slow night.

Berliners Hanna and Simon, a couple in their 40's, have grown comforable in their relationship. Independently, each meets and romances Adam, a handsome young man. Hanna becomes pregnant. All three must face what they tried to ignore. German film with no one you would recognize. That being said, it will keep your interest. DVD or instant play.
Certified Copy
Captivating meditation on art and love. British writer, James Miller, meets a beautiful Italian gallery owner in Tuscany and begins or possibly continues a romance. Stars Juliette Binoche and William Shimell. The mother of all touchy, feely films with great and deep thoughts on relationships and the opposite sex. Don't expect your male significant other to last more than 20 minutes. However, great scenery.
True Legend
A powerful cabal in China's Qing Dynasty conspires to ruin their weathy rival, Su Qi. They don't stop until he is driven to the streets and stripped of home and money. Su Qi submits to the master teacher who helps him become powerful. This is an action film so prepare for some butt kicking and martial arts moves tha no one could really accomplish. The story line is a bit soppy but it is Chinese. No one you have ever heard of stars in this film. Available on DVD. Definitely a guy flick.
To Rome With Love
Woody Allen plays a father meeting his daughter's Italian in-laws-to-be. The movie weaves four different tales set in Rome. There is Woody who just retired from the music business (not by choice) trying to launch a possible music career for the to be father in-law. There are the young Italian newly weds that arrive in Rome to meet rich relatives who can launch new husbands career. Penelope Cruz gets involved as a hooker who ends up in the new husband's room by mistake. Alec Baldwin is trying to relive his young days in Rome by hooking up with a young American Architect and his girlfriend. It all intertwines but there are truly some funny moments. And there is Rome and its sights. Okay, I am predigested--Rome is one of my favorite cities. Go for the travel experience. Also stars Roberto Benigni as a nobody turned celebrity for the moment. Not as creative as Midnight in Paris, but worth seeing.
Your Sister's Sister
Jack is mourning the death of his brother and is having a hard time getting over his grief. Jack has a complicated relationship with his best friend who dated his brother. Yeah, best friend is female and sexy. Best friend gives Jack the keys to her family's cabin toalow him to take some time off and cope with the death of his brother. Even sexier sister of best friend show up at the cabin unexpectantly. Jack and sister of best friend have a drunken tryst and the story goes straight to the saga of all relationships. No blood, no gore just that real gooey relationship stuff. Emily Blunt, Rosemarie Dewitt, and Mark Duplas give fine performances. The ending is different but I am not going to tell you. If you miss it at the theatre, definitely a DVD option.
Intouchables
Great movie and I highly recommend it. It is a true story of an affluent quadriplegic named Philipe who hires a young West African Parisian named Driss to be his caregiver. The story centers around the bond the two men form. They are so different but yet so alike. Driss provides Philipe experiences that do not dwell on his handicap. You will laugh and cheer the pair during some of their antics. It stars Francois Cluzet and Omar Sy--who I haven't heard of either. The acting is superb.

It's in the Genes
Ever since I was a little girl, I loved movies. My mother was also a "flick chick". I remember her taking me to three movies in one day over a Christmas vacation. My favorite movie was "Swiss Family Robinson" with James McArthur. It was a fantasy come true for a little farm girl who was just use to chickens and pigs. We were living in town when I went to this movie--let me add that I stayed for three showings of it. I just never came home and the family was ready to call the police when I sashayed in the door. I am writing this blog at the requests of neighbors and friends who say they trust my judgement. Since retiring, a whole new experience has opened--MATINEES!!!! The best part is how small the audience is--often I am the only person in the theater.
Friday, I went to Beasts of the Southern Wild. I have too many teacher relatives and friends working in low income schools not to realize how poverty effects children. It is a story of survival. You have to love Hush Puppy, the six year old motherless child. She thinks she has it pretty good even with an abusive father. Then the hurricane hits and the "bathtub" floods. See the movie if you want a real life experience. The acting is superb--especially Hush Puppy.
