Saving Mr. Banks

When Walt Disney set his sights on obtaining the rights to the classic children's book "Mary Poppins", he reaches out to the book's author, P. L. Travers, only to find that she proves a tough nut to crack.  Just a great movie with some fascinating background on Mr. Banks who is the author's father.  The movie hinges around why Ms. Travers is so stubborn about agreeing to let Disney make the movie "Mary Poppins".  I give it an eight.  Stars Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Colin Farrell, Paul Giamatti.

American Hustle

A fictionalization of the "Abscam" scandal of the early 1980's, the movie follows con man Irving Rosenfeld and his lover, Sydney Prosser, as they help an eccentric FBI agent expose corruption among several members of Congress in New Jersey and Pennsylavania.  The start of the movie is confusing with many intertwined plots.  But, it does keep your attention.  Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence are outstanding in their performances.  I give it an 8.  Stars Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Jennifer Lawrence.

Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug

This is the second installment of Bilbo Baggins dramatic experiences in Middle Earth.  Accompanied by Gandalf and 13 dwarfs, Bilbo journeys toward a confrontation with dragon Smaug.   Plenty of action and breath holding moments in this tale (think an add on to Lord of the Rings).  But, it moves at a fast clip.  Be prepared for the End which should read "to be continued".  Yes, there is a third movie (and last) in the works.  If you are into to this sort of fantasy  (and I am), you will enjoy it.  The theater was fairly full at a Wednesday 1100 performance.  I give it an 8.  Stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage and Cate Blanchett.

Out of the Furnace

Working-class siblings Russell and Rodney Baze are desperate to flee the Rust Belt and find better lives.  But when a twist of fate lands Russell in jail,  Rodney gets mixed up with a crime syndicate and their brotherly bond is soon put to the test.  Very disjointed movie and scenes don't always fall in sequence.  The opening scene makes no sense and at times none of the others do either.  Also, a very violent film.  I give it a 7.  Stars Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck and Forest Whitaker.

Philomena

Floundering BBC journalist Martin Sixsmith and aging Irishwoman Philomena Lee form an unlikely bond when they pair up to find the son Philomena was forced to give up for adoption 50 years ago.
Judi Dench was her same wonderful and entertaining self.  Great story and based on reality which is generally appalling that the Catholic Church would condone this.  I give it an 8.  Stars Judi Dench, Steve Coogan, Sophie Kennedy Clark.

Thor: The Dark World

The God of Thunder strikes again as he fights to save the Nine Realms from mysterious villain Malekith, who plans to make the entire universe go dark.  Meanwhile, Thor must find Jane Foster, who's been targeted by the evil denizens of Svartalfheim.  Lots of action but often disjointed as it goes from one Realm to another.  I give it a 6.  Stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins.

Hunger Games: Catching Fire

After her triumph in the Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen begins a new life and confronts more danger in this sequel to the post apocalyptic fable. As Katniss travels through the districts on a "Victor's Tour, a rebellion gathers steam around her. No more or I'll spoil the movie but it does follow the book.  Two and a half hours flew by due to the great acting and action.  I give it an 8.  Don't miss it on the big screen.  Stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson and Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Nebraska

When a cantankerous old boozer thinks he's won a magazine sweepstakes prize, his son reluctantly takes a road trip with him to claim the fortune.  As they drive from Montana to Nebraska, they visit friends and relatives to whom dad owes money.  Do not miss this movie.  Being from the rural prairie land of Colorado, it was easy to relate to these characters.  In fact I might be related to a couple.  Words can't do justice to the acting and facial expressions of the characters.  Some of the best comic moments I've seen in any movie this year.  I give it a 9.  Stars Bruce Dern, Will Forte, June Squibb, Stacey Keach.

The Dallas Buyers Club

Loosely based on true events, this drama follows Ron Woodroof, who refuses to accept he'll die in 30 days when he is diagnosed with AIDS in 1986.  He extends his life and eventually helps many other AIDS patients by smuggling medications from abroad.  This is a very moving story with the FDA as the bad guy.  Having lived overseas, I found that many very useful medications are not found in the USA because the FDA doesn't approve them.  Matthew McConaughey gives a great performance.  I give it an eight.  Stars Matthew McConaughey, Jenifer Garner, Jared Leto, Steve Zahn.

The Book Thief

Young Liesel steals books to teach herself to read which gives her refuge from the horrors of Nazi Germany and the mother that abandoned her.  Her foster father shows her affection and helps to teach her to read but the foster mother pretends to be cold.  Her foster parents are hiding a Jewish man in their home.  The refugee's father saved the life of the foster father in WWI.  Liesel forms a strong bond with the man and ups her book taking to entertain him.  This is an excellent movie with many memorable scenes.  I give it an eight.  Stars Sophie Nelisse, Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson, Ben Schnetzer.

All Is Lost

In this harrowing drama--which has no dialogue--a man stranded alone at sea courageously battles
a ferocious storm as he struggles to survive.  Another movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end.  It is exhausting but well done.  Robert Redford give the performance of a lifetime.  I give it a 9.  Only one star--Robert Redford.

12 Years A Slave

This is the autobiography of Solomon Northup, a free black man who was abducted from New York state and sold in the mid-1800s as a slave in the South.  The trauma of going from a free man to a slave is appalling.  It was hard to focus on the quality of the movie because I was so angry.  A real ugly part of American history is slavery and their treatment.  The movie was slow at times but worth seeing.  I give it a 7.  Stars Chiwetel Ejiofor; Brad Pitt; Michael Fassbender; Paul Giamatti.

Captain Phillips

Another heart stopper suspense story.  This exciting adventure  story is based on true events that made international headlines.  Ton Hanks portrays Captain Richard Phillips who is taken hostage by Somali pirates after they hijack his cargo ship.  The U.S. Navy's efforts to rescue him will keep you on the edge of your seat.  It is hard to take a breath  the entire movie because of the suspense.  I give it a solid 9.  Don't miss it unless you have a heart condition.  Stars Tom Hanks, Catherine Keener, John Margo, Max Martini.

Gravity

As a medical engineer on her first shuttle mission embarks on a space walk with a seasoned astronaut, debris strikes their craft and destroys it leaving the two to float through space tethered together with no connection to Earth.  This is an awesome technological day dream of a movie.  It is a must to see it in 3D since it is the best 3D movie that I have ever seen.  You will feel like you are floating in space.  The movie keeps you on the edge of your seat. I was exhausted by the end.  I give it a 10 and think it will win the Academy.  Stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

Don Jon

Jon Martello's romantic exploits are legendary among his friends, but his obsession with online porn is starting to sap his enthusiasm for real sex.  As he tries to regain his hunger for intimacy, Jon meets two women with vital lessons to teach him.  No doubt that this is a 20/30 something movie.  So it is hard to rate since I could not relate.  Go if you are in that age group or wait for the DVD.  I give it a seven.  Stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson,; Julianne Moore.

Enough Said

A charming comedy about a divorced woman venturing into a relationship with a sweet man.  But things get tricky  when she discovers the man she is dating is the hated ex-husband of her new best friend.  It is funny and very entertaining with some great lines. I give an eight.  Stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus, James Gandolfini, Catherine Keener , Toni Collette

Wadjda

Persistent 10-year-old Wadjda would like nothing more than a new bicycle so she can beat her friend (a boy) in a race.  But it is going to take some ingenuity to get one--especially in her culture, which sees bikes as a threat to a girl's virtue.  Hard to sit through a movie when all you want to do is smack some male faces (and some females too) for their archaic view of females to include children and the impression that females are of no value.  While Wadjda schemes for her bicycle, mom has problems of her own with a disrespectful and absent husband.  It is amazing how many ways there are to treat women and girls badly.  I give it a 10 and think it should be required viewing in all political science and American History classes.  You leave the theater knowing and thankful you are an American and can walk or drive freely down a street.  Stars Reem Abdullah, Waad Mohammed, Sulton Al Assaf.

Thanks For Sharing

While making his way through a support group for sex addicts, Adam dips his toe in the dating pool to embrace a meaningful relationship.  But the woman he is attracted to has sworn off addicts altogether.  Hard to review and rate this one because of the subject matter.  Very graphic sex scenes and disturbing.  I was glad to leave the theater.  I give it a 5.  Stars Mark Ruffalo, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim Robbins.

The Patience Stone

Atiq  Rahimis's novel about the trials of a modern-day Muslim woman living in an unspecified Middle Eastern nation whose very existence is awash in conflict. A young wife with two small children is caring for her warrior husband who has been wounded and is comatose.  His family  has fled and left her behind to care for hubby. Only her aunt (who is a prostitute) gives her some aid. An hour and a half of treating women badly.  I left the theater grateful to be an American.  Well acted although hard to take at times.  I give it a 7.  Stars Golshifteh Farahani and Massi Mrowut.

Instructions Not Included

When Acapulco playboy Valentin  has the baby of the girl he broke up with dumped on his doorstep, he hightails it across the border to locate the infant's  mother.  But, when she proves elusive, Valentin unexpectedly begins to develop feelings for the tot.  This is a sleeper.  I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.  The movie moves at a fast clip and is funny  and best of all the subtitles are legible.  It goes between English and Spanish.  I give it a 7.5 or an 8.  Stars Eugeniao Derbez, Jessica Lindsey, Loreto Peraltoa, Daniel Raymont.

The Family

The Mazonis, an infamous mob family, are relocated to Normandy, France, by the Witness Protection Program, where they have some difficulty fitting into the culture. When local problems arise, they respond the only way they know how:  Mafia Style.  It really is a comedy although lots of gunfire and beating the other guy up.  Robert De Niro is good but Michelle Pfeiffer is outstanding in her role.  I give it a 7 and a try to get to theater to see it.  Stars Robert DeNiro, Tommy Lee Jones,  Michelle Pfeiffer, Dianna Agron, Ricardo Cordero.

Therese

In southwestern France in the 1920's, two wealthy families are joined by an arranged marriage between the dull Bernard and the restless Therese.  Desperately bored and longing for meaning in her life, Therese concocts a drastic solution to her problems.  It is a well acted and entertaining movie that has very few slow moments.  The plot is unusual enough to keep you guessing.  I give it a 7.  It stars Audrey Tautou, Gilles Lellouche, Anais Demoustien, Catherine Ardit.

Closed Circuit

Martin and Claudia, top-flight lawyers who happen to be former lovers, become targets when they're teamed up to defend a notorious terrorist.  As the trial unfolds, the danger causes the air to reevaluate their allegiance to justice.  Entertaining but not so overwhelming that you spend the entire movie on the edge of your seat.  It can be saved for DVD.  I give it a 6.  Stars Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall, Ciaran Hinds and Julia Stiles.

The World's End

Twenty years after attempting a marathon pub crawl, a group of friends reunites to give it another shot.  Their ultimate destination is The World's End pub, whose name turns out to be rather literal.  The last of a trilogy (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz), the movie is typical British humor.  With that being said, it will haunt you in a good way.  It is not scary but funny.  Some of the lines are classic.  It is one that I am leaving on my DVD list to see again and catch those elusive funny lines.  I give it an 8.  See it and keep up with the 20/30's generation.  Stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Paddy Considine, and Martin Freeman.

Short Term 12

Grace, a compassionate young supervisor at a foster care facility, works with her boyfriend and colleague, Mason, to help at-risk teens.  But when a new charge dredges up memories of her own troubled past, Grace's tough exterior begins eroding.  Very realistic with outstanding acting by the young cast.  I never even looked at my watch, it was so entertaining.  I give it a nine and encourage you not to miss it.   Stars Brie Larson, John Gallagher, Jr., Kaitlyn Dever, Rami Malek, Keven Hernandez.

Kick-Ass 2

In this sequel, high school super hero Kick-Ass has to find a new crime-fighting partner after Hit Girl is suddenly taken out of action.  He joins another superhero team and is soon locked in battle with a super villain bent on vengeance.  Okay, it is not anywhere near a contender for an Academy Award.  But, it is just plain  fun and totally unrealistic.  I give it a 5 or 6 and chalk it up to appeasing my inner child.  Stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson; Chloe Grace Moretz, Christophe Mintz-Plasse and Jim Carey.

Austenland

Jane Hayes is so taken with Jane Austen's novels that she decides to splurge on a trip to an English resort that caters to Austen fans.  But when the authentic period romance Jane was promised proves unacceptable, she acts to alter her fate.  So corny  that it is really funny.  The characters are totally unrealistic and over the top in humor.  I give it a 7.  Go to the theater because it is more fun with lots of people laughing.  Stars Keri Russell, J.J. Field and Jenifer Coolidge.

In A World

Vocal coach Carol Solomon lives in the shadow of her father Sam, Hollywood's go to movie trailer voice, as she tries to break into the field herself.  Aided by her sister and sound whiz friend, Carol jumps into an unexpected strange new career.  Very entertaining but not academy award material.  The feminist angle and support for women getting ahead makes you want to cheer.  I give it a 6.  Stars Lake Bell, Fred Melamed, Geena Davis, and Demetri Martin.

Lee Daniels The Butler

Forest Whitaker delivers a powerful performance as Cecil Gaines, who served as the White House butler under eight presidents.  His three decades of service unfold against a backdrop of unparalleled  change in civil rights and American history.  The black cast gives superb performances.  The eight presidents (except for Robin Williams) and their first ladies, not so much.  I am giving a prize to the person that can identify which parts Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave played.  Half way into the movie, I was ready to leave and join the 50th Anniversary of the March on DC which was taking place at the same time.  But I stayed and enjoyed the movie.  I give it an eight.  It stars Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, John Cusack, Jane Fonda, Cuba Gooding Jr, Terrance Howard, Robin Williams and Vanessa Redgrave.  This only a selection of the stars.

Jobs

Ashton Kutcher delivers a tour de force performance as Apple founder Steve Jobs in this biopic that spans three decades of the entrepreneur's life.  The story follows Jobs from the obscurity of a Palo Alto garage to global fame as a technology icon.  Kutcher knocked my socks off with his performance.  Steve Jobs as this self made man also threw me for a loop.  The story of his life is overwhelming especially with all the ups and downs.  I give the movie a 9 and DON'T MISS THIS ONE rating.  Mud and Jobs are the movies of the 2013 so far.  Stars Ashton Kutcher; Dermot Mulroney; Josh Gad; Lesley Ann Warren.

The Spectacular Now

When high school loner Aimee Finicky finds her classmate Sutter Keely passed-out drunk on her lawn, it marks the start of an unlikely friendship.  After deciding to help Aimee raise her social confidence, Sutter finds himself falling for his creation.  More of a movie about teen alcoholism than relationships with a touch of  bad parenting.  Aimee is the normal studious good kid and good old Sutter is the ultimate bad influence.   I would never allow a teen of mine to see this one.  I give it a 3.  Stars Miles Teller; Shailene Woodley and Brie Larson.

2 Guns

Two special agents-one Naval Intelligence, one DEA-partner for an undercover sting against a drug cartel that takes a serious wrong turn.  Disavowed by their agencies, the pair goes on the run while trying to find out who set them up.  Totally a guys movie with lots of action and no weepy relationship stuff.  It was just plain fun.  I give it a 7.  Stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg.

Man of Steel

In another revival of the Superman legend, reporter Clark Kent must keep his alien origins and fantastic powers hidden from the world.  But when Kryptonian General Zod plans to destroy Earth, the Man of Steel springs into action.  Bring your ear plugs to this movie because it is very loud.  But it is also disjointed going from the past to present.  And it is very long to the point you are saying enough already just kiss the girl and get on with it.  I give it a 5 and say save it for DVD.  I liked Christopher Reeves better in the staring role.  Stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russel Crowe.

Starbuck/ Delivery Man ????

In 2011 there was a French film called Starbuck.  The story line is a 40 something slacker's life is turned upside down when he learns that his many sperm donations have resulted in more than 500 children--100 of whom are now suing to meet their father, who is desperate to keep his identity a secret.  The movie stars Patrick Huard, Julie LeBreten and Antonio Bertard.  The movie only played two weeks at Shirlington but I got it on DVD.  I was shocked to see a preview today  of a movie call "Delivery Man" which has the exact same plot.  This movie stars Vince Vaughn and is set in the USA and not France but the script is exactly the same.  Delivery Man opens November 2013.  The French version was very good.  The mystery is what hanky panky is going on in Hollywood?   It can't even be considered a remake because of the quick time lapse.  If I was the French film maker and cast, I would take legal actions.

We're The Millers

When a small time pot dealer gets mugged, he needs to find a way to pay back his supplier.  Agreeing to smuggle in a major stash from Mexico, he rounds up a fake family to act as his cover, and they head for the border in an RV.  Very funny and entertaining movie so I give it a 7.  Jennifer is still better than Brad in the movie business.  Her stripe tease dance is great.  Stars Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts and Will Poulter.

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

Blue Jasmine

The high life leads to high anxiety for a fashionable New York City homemaker who loses everything and is forced to live a more modest lifestyle in San Francisco. Cate Blanchett give a memorable performance as the wife in crisis and on the edge of a total mental breakdown.  I give it a seven.  Stars Alec Baldwin, Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkings.

The Lone Ranger

In this reboot of the 1950's television series, Native American Tonto rescues wounded lawman John Reid  and restores him to health, thus creating an often contentious but effective partnership as they attempt to rid the old west of corruption.  Panned by the critics but really hilarious if you have any sense of humor.  I will keep this on my DVD list because I missed so many funny lines while I was holding my sides laughing.  I give it an 8.  Don't miss it.  Stars Johnny Depp, Arnie Hammer, Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson.

Saturday, August 3, 2013

Still Mine

His home in disrepair, elderly farmer Craig Morrison must build a better shelter for his wife, whose health is deteriorating rapidly.  He faces the wrath of an overzealous government inspector but refuses to back down.  Very realistically done movie with great acting.  I give it an 8 and a punch to the picky inspector.  Stars James Cromwell, Genevieve Bujold, Campbell Scott and Julie Stewart.

Girl Most Likely

After staging an unsuccessful suicide to get her boyfriend's attention, a struggling playwright moves back home to live with her mother, her mother's odd boyfriend, her even odder brother and a handsome lodger who sings Backstreet Boys songs at the New Jersey casino.  The movie is entertaining with many funny scenes.  I give it a 6.  Stars Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening, Daren Criss, Matt Dillon.

I'm So Excited

When a flight bound for Mexico City runs into trouble, the frightened passengers aboard start sharing their deepest secrets to distract themselves from impending doom--with hilarious results.  I was expecting more from Penelope Cruz and Antonio Bandaras.  There were many funny scenes but also some tasteless sex ones too.  I give it a 5 and say save it for a DVD.  Stars Penelope Cruz, Antonio Bandaras, Paz Vega, and Javier Camara.

The Way, Way Back

A stifled teen finds his voice with encouragement from the manager of a local water park, where he takes a summer job to escape his unbearable home life with his mom and her overbearing boyfriend.
A coming of age tale that is very entertaining with great characters.  It is humorous and will keep your attention.  See it now since it one of the best this summer.  I give it an 8.  Stars Liam James, Steve Carell, AnnaSophia Robb, Amanda Peet and Toni Collette.

Unfinished Song

With his wife Marion terminally ill, 72-year-old Arthur see a future that's nothing but grim.  But when he takes Marion's place in their church's very unconventional choir, he begins to find joy in life again.  Great to see older actors and actresses performing in a vivid life scenario.  It hits close to home. It is touching and humorous.  I give it a 7.  Stars Terence Stamp; Gemma Arteton; Vanessa Redgrave and Christopher Eccleston.

The Heat

In this action comedy, Sandra Bullock heads the cast as a by-the-book FBI agent who forms an unlikely alliance with unconventional street cop (Melissa McCarthy) to take down a drug gangster.  How can you go wrong with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy?  It is hilarious to the point of being the new "vaudeville".  It was refreshing to go to a movie and just laugh.  I give it a 7.  Stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.

Much Ado About Nothing

To truly enjoy this movie, read the Shakespearean play before you go to the movie.  In Joss Whedon's modern take on the Shakespearean comedy, Claudio's love for the beautiful Hero makes him a target of his friend Benedick's mockery. But as Benedick trades barbs with Hero's cousin Beatrice, he may just be falling in love.  The film is in black and white but that should not deter you.  It was filmed in the director's home in two weeks, which is amazing since it is so well done.  The characters speak the Elizabethan dialect so it takes at least a half hour to adjust to it.  The character's costumes look right out of the 50's or 60's.  Men are in suits and ties.  Women are in very feminine and fussy print dresses. Overall it is very clever and did I say well done and funny.  I give it an 8.  Stars Amy Acker, Nathen Fillion and Fran Kranz.

The Internship

Two out-of-work salesmen, lacking the digital-savvy skill they need to find jobs, sign on as interns with Google.  While their assignment may give them the training they need, it also means staying one step ahead of their ignorance.  It was refreshing to see a real comedy.  How can you go wrong with Vince Vaughn or Owen Wilson.  I give it a 7.  Stars Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.

The Kings of Summer

Chafing under his widowed father's control, Joe Toy invites a friend and an offbeat new kid to help him build his own house in the nearby woods. Now that the trio is finally free from parents and responsibility, the movie centers on their ability to live on their own.  The movie is a well done coming of age experience.  A little far fetched and slow at times but enjoyable.  I would rate it a 6 and probably save it for DVD.  Stars Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso and Megan Mullally.

Fill The Void

18 year old Shira is thrilled that the marriage arranged for her within the  Orthodox Jewish Community is with a boy she likes, but when her sister dies in childbirth, Shira's hopes for her future are thrown into turmoil by her grieving mother who wants her to marry the husband of her dead sister.  How many ways can one mistreat women?  The movie definitely focuses on women as the unworthy sex and expendable.  Well acted but disturbing in the treatment of women.  I give it a 7.  Stars Hadas Yaron and Yiftach Klein.

Friday, June 14, 2013

Frances Ha

Determined to make it as a modern dancer in New York, Frances pursues her unlikely goal with more enthusiasm than natural talent.  The rest of the time, she and her sardonic friend, Sophie, put off growing up for as long as they can.  Bringing your significant other to this movie is questionable. It is about relationships and all that mushy stuff.  A total deficit on the action.  I give it a 7.  Stars Greta Gerwig, Mickey Summer, and Adam Driver.

Before Midnight

This is the third in the series of romantic dramas:  Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. Jessie and Celine are back after years of living together and having twins.  In this romantic drama they are re looking their relationship.  Mainly a dialogue between Jessie and Celine but well done and hits a relationship note for couple who have been together for a long time.  I give it an eight.  Try to see the first two movies in this series before going.  Stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.

What Maisie Knew

In this updated rendering of the timeless Henry James novel, a perceptive 6-year-old girl becomes a bargaining tool when she gets caught in the midst of a toxic custody fight between her self-seeking , childish parents.  The two people not related to her turn out to be the better parents.  Very entertaining with a thought provoking issue.  I rate it an 8.  Stars Julianne Moore, Alexander Skarsgard, Onata April, Steve Coogan.

Love Is All You Need

Pierce Brosnan stars in this romantic comedy about several people in Sorrento, Italy searching for love and dealing with jealousy, passion, romance and loneliness as they struggle to change their lives for the better.  The event that brings them together is a destination wedding.  This is a romance of the 50-60 generation.  Funny and well done.  I give it a 7.  The scenery is to die for.  Stars Trin Dyrholm, Pierce Brosnan, Kim Bodina, Paprika Steen.

The Great Gatsby

Mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby is obsessed with Daisy Buchanan in this adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel.  Fascinated by the mysterious, affluent Gatsby, his neighbor Nick Caraway bears witness to the man's obsessive love and spiral into tragedy.  Not the epic of the aggressive ad campaign that proceeded the movie, however, it was glitzy and fast paced.  I was never bored even when the movie script deviated from the novel in the end.  Of course, I didn't like either ending. I would rate it a 7.  Toby McGuire and Leonardo DiCaprio carried the movie.  One could save it for DVD.  Stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey McGuire, Carey Mulligan.

The Company You Keep

Robert Redford stars as Jim Grant, a lawyer and single dad who has to go on the lam after a reporter identifies him as a long-sought U.S. terrorist.  As the journalist locates more of Grant's old contact, his guilt begins to appear less certain.  The movie was much better than I expected.  It was great to see the "old stars" appearing in such great roles.  This was not a PR piece for the FBI.  I really wanted to smack the agent in charge as being a real douche bag.  The reporter also deserved a smack for being an insensitive idiot.  I rate it a 7.5.  Very entertaining.  Stars Robert Redford, Julie Christi, Sam Elliot, Terrance Howard, Nick Nolte; Susan Sarandon.

The Big Wedding

A long divorced couple pretends years of wedded bliss to please their son's birth mother as she travels to the USA for the nuptials.  As the hoax spins out of control among family and friends, it leaves behind a  poignant and funny tale about ties that bind.  Entertaining and amusing with the senior actor and actresses carrying the weight of the film.  I would rate it a 6.  Stars Robert DeNiro, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, Katherine Heigal.

Mud

Two Mississippi teens, Ellis and Neckbone, meet a mysterious drifter named Mud hiding on a deserted river island and get caught up in his tangled web of tall tales about bounty hunters, crimes of passion, lost love and a perfect woman named Juniper.  The best picture of the new year after many dismal movies in 2013.  Everyone loves sexy Mathew McConaughey even in his scruffy state.  Great entertainment and it keeps you on the edge of your seat.  I give it an eight.  Stars Mathew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Sam Shepard, Sarah Paulson.

To The Wonder

Soon after returning to his native Oklahoma with a beautiful woman he met in Paris, Neil finds himself drifting toward an old friend.  Meanwhile, the woman he brought back with him has unfinished business with her first husband.  With that being said, I would have not been able to write this without Netflix synopsis.  There is virtually no dialogue in the movie.  The only help one gets are some subtitles.  Never is Ben Affleck's  character called by name--so Neil is a shock to me.  Beautiful woman has a 10 year old daughter that tags along.  Beautiful woman, whatever her name is, is nuts and spends the majority of the film twirling around like a bad ballerina or rolling in dead grass, leaves or whatever.  Her subtitles allude to a crack pot philosophy on love.  The old friend isn't any better.  She has issues that really because of no dialogue are not clear, but what a guessing game.  Oh did I forget the equally nuts priest?  In the broad spectrum, I got the impression he was confused about God and his role but once again with no dialogue it is hard to tell.  This is the ultimate "artsy fartsy flick".  There is a lot to be said for a good story line.  How Ben Affleck can go from Argo to this is bewildering.  I give it a 2 only because of the boots.  Both females wore great boots--with no dialogue, nothing to distract you.  Stars ( and that is using the term loosely) Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylendo, Javier Bardem, Rachel McAdams.

This biopic focuses on the relationship between baseball icon Jackie Robinson and Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey, who signed Robinson and in 1947 made him the first black Major League Baseball player of the modern era.  Excellent portrayals of the characters and very uplifting.  I rate it an Eight.  Makes one hang their head in shame at the treatment of blacks in that era.  Harrison Ford, Alan Tudyk, Lucas Black, Christopher Melont.

Trance

This is a thriller about an art heist gone wrong and the hypnotist who's hired to ferret out the missing master piece.  Everything is a jumble after an auctioneer gets hit in the head while double crossing some art thieves.  Entertaining but not exceptional.  This can be saved for DVD.  Rating is a 6 (just above average).  Lots of nude scenes so keep the kids home.  Stars James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel.

Everyone Has a Plan

Viggo Mortensen stars  in this thriller as twin brothers Augustin, a doctor living a comfortable but mundane life and Pedro, who has a criminal past.  When Pedro dies, Augustin adopts his brother's identity and gets a taste of Argentina's underworld.  I am rating this a 7 because it is entertaining but dark.  Can't believe people really live like that.  Starts Viggo Mortensen, Soledad Villamil, Daniel Fanego, Sofia Gala.

Ginger and Rosa

With the cold war looming over them, teen best pals Ginger and Rosa share everything in early London- until betrayal drives them apart.  This is a drama steeped in the anxieties of the nuclear age.
Ginger is the ultimate Debbie Downer singing "On the bad ship lollipop..."  You just want to smack her at times.  The teens need elocution lessons.  Thank goodness for Annette Bening who is understandable.  The movie rates a four or five.  The ending is one of those "what the hell happened here" endings.  Starts Elle Fanning, Alice Englert, Christina Hendrick, Annette Bening and Timothy Spall.

The Sapphires

The spirit and vitality of the 1960's soul music are at the core of this film about a real-life Australian aborigine singing group and their bumpy career.  Three sisters and a cousin are brought together as the Sapphires by a talent scout with a plan inspired by the youngest sister.  They answer an advertisement to audition for a gig in Viet Nam.  This movie is near and dear to me because I was in Viet Nam in 1968 and could relate to life with the military there.  Not all is factual but the story is true.  The devil is in the details like modes of transportation.  I won't go into that now.  For those that want more details just email me at sconklin00@Gmail.com.  I lived it and will share.  The music is great as are the singers.  I am changing my ratings to one to ten.  One being as sucky as a movie can get.  Ten is Academy Award material.  This movie is getting an 8.  You will tap your toes during the whole thing.  Stars Chris O'Dowd, Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens.

Oz The Great and Powerful

In this prequel to The Wizard of Oz, circus magician Oscar Diggs is magically transported to the Land of Oz where he deals with three witches and uses his illusionist skills and resourcefulness to be come the Wizard the residents have been expecting.  Go to this movie if you want your imagination to run wild.  It has great 3D and a charming story.  Although the witch scenes could scare young children.  The characters are thoroughly delightful.  3 bags of popcorn.  Stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams.

In this engaging drama from Chile, Gael Garcia Bernal portrays Rene Saavedra, a hot-shot ad executive who creates a controversial media campaign opposing military dictator Augusto Pinochet during the referendum of his presidency in 1988.  No violence or bloodshed but a very creative ad campaign.  A little humor and some tense moments but thoroughly entertaining.  4 bags of popcorn.  Stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Alfredo Castro, Antonia Zegers, Nestor Cantillana.

The Gatekeepers

Meet six leaders of Israel's secret service, the Shin Bet, which has dealt with conflict amid the quest for peace for nearly 50 years.  For the first time, these men discuss the challenging consequences of their counter terrorism mission.  Very informative and very heavy movie.  I am not big on political documentaries but this one can shake your boots.  I give it 3 bags of popcorn.  It stars real people that actually led the Shin Bet.  For trivia knowledge they are:  Ami Ayalon, Yuval Diskin, Carmi Gillon, Yuatov Peri, Avraham Shalom.

Lore

After her Nazi parents are imprisoned, Lore leads her younger siblings across a war-torn Germany in 1945.  Amid chaos, she encounters a mysterious refugee named Thomas, who shatters her fragile reality with hatred and desire.  With that being said, this movie is the direct opposite of a thriller.  Yes, we are talking real, real slow.  Lore and her siblings are the poster children for Hitler's Youth Movement.  Thomas may or not be a Jewish refugee from a concentration camp.  He has the paperwork but looks a little too well-fed.  I am giving this two bags of popcorn.
Save it for a DVD.  Stars Saskia Rosendahl, Andre Frid, Nele Tebs.

JackThe Giant Slayer

When Princess Isabelle is kidnapped by rampaging giants, mild mannered farm boy Jack, who accidentally opened the gateway that allowed the giants to enter the kingdom, goes in search of her.  He faces off with the giants and the King's wicked chief advisor.  This movie is just fun and the special effects are outstanding.  Jack definitely kicks some giant bootie.  3 bags of popcorn.  Don't wait for DVD because you will miss the 3D big screen experience.  Stars Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson, Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor.

Identity Thief

Is Sandy Patterson a banking executive living in Colorado with his wife and kids or is he a she and living it up in Florida?  When Sandy is accused of crimes he hasn't committed, he must track down the woman who is using his identity.  Hilarious but can be saved for the DVD.  3 bags of popcorn.  Stars Jason Bateman, Melissa McCarthy, Jon Favreau and Amanda Peet.

Stand Up Guys

The tough-guy comedy follows the rambunctious reunion between three retired gangsters and their reminiscences of wild times and crimes gone by.  Energized by their own memories, the drunken friends unwisely undertake a reckless criminal adventure.  Entertaining but save for the DVD.  2 bags of popcorn.  Stars Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Alan Arkin, and Julianna Margulies.

Side Effects

Emily copes with her depression by taking antidepressant medication.  But when her dire state apparently spirals out of control due to her husband's prison release, she turns to a new medication that alters life forever.  I can't say any more about this psychological thriller without giving away the plot.  It will keep you on the edge of your seat.  Catherine Zeta-Jones at her most evil self.  Four bags of popcorn.  Stars Rooney Mara, Jude Law, Channing Tatum, Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Parental Guidance

When their daughter must leave for a week, Artie and Diane Decker find themselves in charge of their three grandchildren, whose well-regimented and high-tech lives leave grandma and grandpa baffled and ready to bring on the old school parenting.  This movie has been at the theater for a long time.  When I went on a Saturday afternoon, their was a mix of baby boomers and middle schoolers.  The movie is entertaining and funny from a grandparent's point of view and a kid's point of view.  By the way, the theater was full of movie goers.  I give this 3 bags of popcorn.  Stars Billy Crystal, Bette Midler, Marisa Tomei, Tom Everett Scott.

Hyde Park On Hudson

When the King and Queen of England visit Franklin Delano Roosevelt hoping for support on the eve of WWII, Roosevelt must deal with his official duties as well as the competing interests of his mother, wife and mistresses.  Sailors may have a girl in every port but FDR had sweet thing in every cottage on the estate.  He was not the wane little disabled President but a "randy" image is portrayed.  I give it 3 bags of popcorn.  Stars Bill Murray, Laura Linney, Olivia Coleman.

Quartet

A trio of retired opera singers' annual celebration of Verdi's birthday sours when their estranged fourth member shows up but refuses to sing.  Tensions rise and diva drama erupts--will personal problems prevent the show from going on?  Maggie Smith is at her best as are all the other older actors and actresses.  Who says they don't have the stuff it takes to continue to be a star.  Totally entertaining for the 50 plus crowd.  I give it 4 bags of popcorn.  It stars Maggie Smith, Tom Courtney, Bill Connolly, Pauline Collins, Michael Gambon.

Amour

This was the 2012 Cannes Film Festival Palm d'Or winner.  Georges and Anne, are retired music teachers in their eighties.  They have a time-tested love.  But as Anne's health fails, Georges becomes her caregiver, and the couple's bond is tested like never before.  This is a typically French movie with a "what in the hell happened" ending.  I give it 3 bags of popcorn.  Stars Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuel Riva, Isabel le Huppert.

Django Unchained

Freed slave Django is saved by a German bounty hunter who makes him a partner in his bounty hunter operation.  Dajango's wife was sold at a Southern slave market.  Django and the German team up to find and free her.  They travel back to the South and track her to a sadistic plantation owner.  The movie is much better than I expected and the violence is not overwhelming.  The German bounty hunter is spectacular and delivers some great and funny lines.  Yes, you will laugh.  It has a real kick in the butt ending.  I give it four bags of popcorn.  Stars Jamie Fox, Christopher Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington.

Zero Dark Thirty

This pulse-pounding thriller dramatizes the night of May 2, 2011, when the Navy's SEAL Team 6 set out to capture or kill Osama bin Laden.  The world knows of their triumph but the movie chronicles  every perilous second.  The movie centers around the CIA agent Mia who tracked down bin Laden and fought the establishment to carry out the mission.  Jessica Chastain does give an Academy Award performance as Mia.  5 to 6 bags of popcorn for this thriller.  Also stars Jason Clark, Joel Edgeton and James Gandolfin.

The Impossible

The movie tracks a family's harrowing experiences during the massive 2004 Tsunami in Thailand.  On December 26, 2004 , Maria, Henry and their three sons are vacationing  on the beach when the Tsunami hits. This is their story of coping and surviving this trauma.  I give the movie 4 bags of popcorn.  It keeps your attention while the disaster unfolds but can't compare to other thrillers that are out now like Argo or Zero Dark Thirty.  The movie stars Naomi Watts, Evan McGregor, Tom Holland and Samuel Joslin.

Rust and Bone

To support his young son, faded boxer Ali Takes a job as a bouncer and meets the free spirited Stephanie, who trains whales at a water park.  After Stephanie suffers a devastating accident, Ali begins a poignant and unexpected relationship with her while pursuing a boxing career.  Typically French, the movie is very entertaining and the lead actors are superb.  Lots of ins and outs so I won't say any more.  Definitely should be on your go to the theater list.  I give it 4 bags of popcorn.   Movie stars Marion Cotillard, Matthias Schoenerts, Armand Verdure and Celine Sallette.

Promised Land

Taking advantage of hard economic times, two salespeople for natural gas company come to a small town to buy drilling rights from residents.  To their surprise, a local school teacher mobilizes a campaign aimed at blocking the company's plans.  The film addresses a situation that is happening in many states.  Of course the big corporation is the bad guy--which might not be necessarily true.  Not earth shaking movie but entertaining.  I give it 3 bags of popcorn. If you miss it at the theater, it is a good DVD pick.  Stars Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Frances McDormand and Hal Holbrook.

Les Miserables

The musical version of Victor Hugo's epic tale of love and sacrifice done in the Big Screen Treatment.  The bloody era of the French Revolution is the backdrop  to Jean Val jean's long struggle for redemption.  I have seen the stage  production three times and was ambivalent about the story.  Hollywood's version knocked my socks off.  I even cried and you all know how jaded I am.   I finally got Victor Hugo's message.  There is so much more to the story that romance and stage can not do the action shots justice.  It stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Ann Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen.  4 to 5 Bags of Popcorn for this one.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Beloved Hobbit Bilbo Baggins is back in a visually spectacular tale inspired by the Lord of the Rings.  Joining the effort to free the kingdom of Erebor,  Bilbo also faces a fateful encounter with Gollum.  This fantasy and adventure at it's best.  It helps that the 3D presentation is superb.  Not for one who can't believe in elves, hobbits, and other weird characters.  Oh there will be two more segments since three hours was not enough time to do the Hobbit adventure justice.  It stars Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchette and Orlando Bloom.  My wise brother suggested I rate movies with bags of popcorn.  My rating system will be:  4 Bags=You'll shoot yourself if you miss it; 3Bags=Entertaining and worth a trip to the theater; 2 Bags= Catch it on DVD; 1 Bag=See it if desperate.  The Hobbit gets 3 Bags.
