Seven Psychopaths

Playing in theaters now, the story centers on Marty a struggling writer who needs inspiration to finish his screenplay Seven Psychopaths.  He get plenty of it when his oddball friends nab a crazed gangster's beloved pooch.  Mary is inadvertently caught up in all the action.  Stars Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, and Christopher Walken.  So perposterous that it is entertaining and not frightening with all the bloodshed.

Sister

Currently playing in theaters, everyday, improvised 12-year -old Simon sneaks into a posh Swiss ski resort, where he helps himself to the gear of wealthy tourists.  Benefiting from his thievery is his lazy sister, Louise who refuses to live up to her responsibilities.  Movie stars Lea Seydoux, Kacey Mottet Klein, Martin Coupston.  Lots of holes in the story like how do they afford that descent apartment when it looks like Simon is the only one bringing in money.  Where is the Swiss welfare system or maybe there isn't one.  Doesn't anyone notice Simon doesn't go to school.  Given all that I was entertained and it brought back fond memories of skiing in Switzerland.  Although I think the scenery was more Mount Blanc in France.

Looper

Playing in the theaters now, in this  sci-fi mind bender, a mob hit man who kills people sent from the future finds himself in a curious predicament when he discovers that one of his targets is his future self, shipped back through time to be whacked.  The movie stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, and Emily Blunt.  Novel idea but at times you get confused by what is the future and what is now.  On the whole, it is entertaining.

The Paperboy

Playing in theaters now, this is the story of a death row inmate's female pen pal that is convinced the the convict is innocent.  She gets a reporter and his brother to investigate and they discover that the case is marred by deceit, seduction and betrayal.  Meanwhile one brother falls for the convicts pen pal.  Stars Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, and John Cusack.  The acting is exceptional, especially Nicole Kidman.  It will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end.

Pitch Perfect

Now playing in theaters, this musically-steeped comedy draws on the worlds of  cappella groups to tell the story of an intense competition between three ensembles.  Ann Kendrick stars in the age-old art form that is gaining popularity today.  Also stars Brittany Snow.  It is also the age-old plot of the "underdog" winning.  While the story is predictable, the music is great and worthy of at least renting the DVD when it comes out.

The Oranges

In theaters now.  When newly unattached Nina Ostroff (Leighton Meesston) comes home for Thanksgiving, her mother makes plans to pair her up with their neighbors successful son Toby (Adam Brody).  But Nina sets her sights on Toby's father and her father's best friend.  Needless to say, friendship and the neighborhood goes to Hell in a hand basket.  The best part is when Toby's mother bitch slaps Nina.  I kinda wanted to do it since the fist 20 minutes of the movie.  Movie also stars Catherine Keener and Allison Janney.   Extremely entertaining.

Butter

When a gifted butter sculptor announces his forced retirement, his ambitious wife sees her hopes for future fame melt away.  She set out to take up the mantle but soon learns how cut throat the world of pro butter sculpting can be when she is challenged by a ten year-old gifted sculptor.  The movie is in theaters now.  It stars Olivia Wilde, Hugh Jackman, and Jennifer Garner.  Very entertaining and worth the trip to the theater.  Although I do not believe Iowa has such a competition.

End Of Watch

In theaters now.  Officers Taylor and Zavata patrol the streets of South Central LA, an area of the city ruled by gangs and riddled with drug violence.  Their perilous beat is captured on security footage and with the HD cameras of cops, criminals and victims.  The movie stars Jake Gyllenhall and Michael Pena.  Something whether it be the movie or the stars will be nominated for an Academy Award or Awards.  Having worked several years with NCIS before retiring, the story is real and a great depiction of the tough career of a law enforcement officer.   Superb acting by everyone including the "bad guys".    I left the theater thanking God for the Men and Women in Blue that put up with the dredges of society for us.

The Perks Of Being a Wallflower

A shy freshman struggling with depression deals with his best friend's suicide and his first love in this engaging coming of age tale.  Logan Lerman and Emma Watson star is the film which is in theaters now.  Not Academy Award material but still entertaining.  There are sub plots which are simple to  interpret except for Aunt Helen.  I don't think that I am that naive but if anyone out there can clue me in on Aunt Helen's role in his depression, please let me know.
